American wine drinkers are moving on up… literally… tired of Shiraz they are switching to mountain grown Malbec. Most are seeking out Malbec especially from Argentina. High in the mountains of Argentina specifically in the Mendoza Lujan de Cuyo district… this grape produces velvety lively wines.
Argentina is the world’s fifth largest wine producing country. They have been producing wines for over 470 years. Young American wine consumers who are “sooo over” the Australian Shiraz find it easy to move up to Argentinean Malbec.
Malbec is enticing because it has intense color, great fruity aroma, velvety texture and long lingering finish. Many of these wines are aged in oak which gives the wine a vanilla influence and soft tannins resulting in an extraordinary balance.
The French make a terrible Malbec. The US produces some that is drinkable but it is best from Argentina. The higher up the mountain the grape is grown… the better the wine. It is fairly priced but higher-up-the-mountain… higher the price… that seems fitting though.
Malbec complements Beef and is even better with Chocolate… or try just sipping for the fun of it.

We were at the Epcot International Food and Wine Festival last weekend, and the Buenos Aires, Argentina booth had steak paired with a Bodega Norton Wines Reserve Malbec that was pretty good! Very full flavored and warm.
